RESUMO

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a method to grow thin metal oxide layers on a variety of materials for applications spanning from electronics to catalysis. Extending ALD to colloidally stable nanocrystals promises to combine the benefits of thin metal oxide coatings with the solution processability of the nanocrystals. However, challenges persist in applying this method, which relate to finding precursors that promote the growth of the metal oxide while preserving colloidal stability throughout the process. Herein, we introduce a colloidal ALD method to coat nanocrystals with amorphous metal oxide shells using metal and oxygen precursors that act as colloidal stabilizing ligands. Our scheme involves metal-amide precursors modified with solubilizing groups and oleic acid as the oxygen source. The growth of the oxide is self-limiting and proceeds in a layer-by-layer fashion. Our protocol is generalizable and intrinsically scalable. Potential applications in display, light detection, and catalysis are envisioned.

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) is a 42-amino acid peptide hormone that regulates postprandial glucose levels. GIP binds to its cognate receptor, GIPR, and mediates metabolic physiology by improved insulin sensitivity, ß-cell proliferation, increased energy consumption, and stimulated glucagon secretion. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) catalyzes the rapid inactivation of GIP within 6 min in vivo. Here, we report a molecular platform for the design of GIP analogues that are refractory to DPP4 action and exhibit differential activation of the receptor, thus offering potentially hundreds of GIP-based compounds to fine-tune pharmacology. The lead compound from our studies, which harbored a combination of N-terminal alkylation and side-chain lipidation, was equipotent and retained full efficacy at GIPR as the native peptide, while being completely refractory toward DPP4, and was resistant to trypsin. The GIP analogue identified from these studies was further evaluated in vivo and is one of the longest-acting GIPR agonists to date.

In our present work, an explicit crosslinked thermo-responsive hydrogel platform has been developed, by using polyacrylamide (PAAm), poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (PCHMA), and then coupled with urease to yield bioconjugates (BCs). Synergic effect of these polymer units provides thermoresponsive nature, optimum crosslinking with desired swelling behaviour, and stability and improved catalytic to Urease in the resultant BCs. Synthesis of the terpolymer has been achieved by employing HEMA (monomer as well as crosslinker), instead of using the conventional crosslinkers, through free radical solution polymerization technique. Various grades of TRPUBs have been fabricated by varying HEMA and CHMA contents while keeping fixed amounts of AAm. Further, the structural analysis of BCs has been done by fourier transform infra-red spectroscopic study and their thermal stabilities have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Urea present in TRPUBs has beenanalysed for its hydrolysis atdifferent temperatures viz., 25 °C, 45 °C and 70 °C. Further, the effect of crosslinking, temperature and reaction time on catalytic activities of TRPUBs has been studied. TRPUBs grades have showna maximum swelling capacity up to 5200 %; excellent catalytic activity even at 70 °C; and 85 % activity retention after 18 days storage in buffer medium.

RESUMO

Thoracolumbar fractures constitute a significant portion of spinal trauma, accounting for 15-20% of the cases. These fractures, caused by high-impact injuries, may involve tears of the posterior ligamentous complex, presenting a high chance of neurological injury ranging from dural tears to spinal root avulsion. This case report discusses a rare occurrence of avulsion of lumbosacral nerve roots posteriorly, becoming entrapped in the fractured spinous process of the L2 lumbar vertebra, leading to cauda equina syndrome following trauma and its implications during surgery.

The exposure to high altitude and cold stress poses challenges in maintaining normal physiological standards and body homeostasis in non-native animals. To enhance our understanding of the physiology of native and non-native goats in high-altitude environments, we conducted a comparative study to examine the impact of natural hypoxic and cold stress conditions on their feed intake (FIT) and associated changes in physiological responses, including plasma glucose concentration (PGC). The study took place at an altitude of 3505.2 m above mean sea level and involved twenty-two healthy females from two different breeds of goats. This study was conducted over a period of 56 days after the arrival of non-native Black Bengal goats (BBN) and compared with native Changthangi (CHAN) goats. Both groups were extensively reared in a natural high-altitude and cold-stress environment in Leh, India, and were subjected to defined housing and management practices. The parameters evaluated included FIT, PGC, respiration rate, heart rate, pulse rate, and rectal temperature. High altitudes had a significant (p < 0.05) impact on FIT, PGC, respiration rate, heart rate, pulse rate, and rectal temperature in BBN, whereas these parameters remained stable in CHAN throughout the study period. Additionally, the detrimental effects of high-altitude stress were more pronounced in non-native goats compared to native goats. These findings suggest that physiological responses in non-native goats tend to stabilize after an initial period of adverse effects in high-altitude environments. Based on the physiological responses and glucose concentration, it is recommended to pay special attention to the nutrition of non-native goats for up to the third week (21 days) after their arrival in high-altitude areas.

Nanosized particles of liquid metals are emerging materials that hold promise for applications spanning from microelectronics to catalysis. Yet, knowledge of their chemical reactivity is largely unknown. Here, we study the reactivity of liquid Ga and Cu nanoparticles under the application of a cathodic voltage. We discover that the applied voltage and the spatial proximity of these two particle precursors dictate the reaction outcome. In particular, we find that a gradual voltage ramp is crucial to reduce the native oxide skin of gallium and enable reactive wetting between the Ga and Cu nanoparticles; instead, a voltage step causes dewetting between the two. We determine that the use of liquid Ga/Cu nanodimer precursors, which consist of an oxide-covered Ga domain interfaced with a metallic Cu domain, provides a more uniform mixing and results in more homogeneous reaction products compared to a physical mixture of Ga and Cu NPs. Having learned this, we obtain CuGa2 alloys or solid@liquid CuGa2@Ga core@shell nanoparticles by tuning the stoichiometry of Ga and Cu in the nanodimer precursors. These products reveal an interesting complementarity of thermal and voltage-driven syntheses to expand the compositional range of bimetallic NPs. Finally, we extend the voltage-driven synthesis to the combination of Ga with other elements (Ag, Sn, Co, and W). By rationalizing the impact of the native skin reduction rate, the wetting properties, and the chemical reactivity between Ga and other metals on the results of such voltage-driven chemical manipulation, we define the criteria to predict the outcome of this reaction and set the ground for future studies targeting various applications for multielement nanomaterials based on liquid Ga.

BACKGROUND: The advent of Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) does influence the overall oral health care of children. The children undergoing HAART have shown an increase in caries activity owing to sugars in medicines to make them more palatable. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess and compare the Oral Health of Children Living with HIV/AIDS (CLHAs) and Adolescents Living with HIV/AIDS (ALHAs) undergoing HAART and those who are HAART-naïve. METHODS: This study was carried out at different Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) across Kerala, India. The study group consisted of 150 HIV-infected children aged 6-18 years. They were divided into two groups. Group 1 comprised of children prior to onset of HAART and Group 2 included children who had been on HAART for more than 3 years (HAART naïve). The assessment of dental caries status and dental plaque status was done. The observations were tabulated and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: On Statistical Analysis, significant difference was noted between the groups with the Group 1(2.26 ± 0.58;p value = .000* ) showing higher scores of dental plaque and a significant difference was also observed with respect to dental caries scores with DMFT and dmft scores higher in Group 2(dmft 2.08 ± 2.85; p value = .001* and DMFT 4.10 ± 1.71;p value = .003*). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that oral hygiene conditions were poor in children with HIV, with dental plaque scores more in HAART-naïve which may be due to their lesser visits and reinforcements regarding oral hygiene from a dentist and dental caries score more in HAART group, this may be attributed to the hidden sugars present in HAART medications to make it more palatable. Early recognition and management of oral conditions are important to improve the quality of life for these children.

A series of furan-2-thiocarboxylate complexes of indium(III), Et3NH[In(SCOf)4] (1), iPr2NH2[In(SCOf)4] (2), [In(2,2'-bipy)(SCOf)3] (3a), and [In(1,10-phen)(SCOf)3] (3b), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Complex 4, [In(TMEDA)(SCOf)(SH)2], was obtained by the partial hydrolysis of [In(TMEDA)(SCOf)3] (3). Heterobimetallic complexes [(SCOf)2In(µ-SCOf)2Cu(PPh3)2] (5) and [(SCOf)2In(µ-SCOf)2Ag(PPh3)2] (6), were also synthesized and characterized. In an attempt to synthesize the binary compound, In(SCOf)3 (7), a thioester fCOSCH2SCOf (8) was obtained serendipitously; thus, a novel convenient approach for thioester synthesis is introduced. The catalytic activities of all the complexes were assessed for Knoevenagel condensation and Knoevenagel initiated MCRs for the synthesis of chromene and imidazopyrimidine derivatives and it was found that complex 2 is a very efficient catalyst (much superior to the previously reported ones).

Introduction Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) present with a multitude of symptoms that can range from headaches to shoulder pain. Patients frequently present with pain in the ear, dizziness, and vertigo. It is noted that some patients who report TMDs also have a history of sleep disturbances, which is noted in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a reduction in the oropharyngeal airway volume. Objective To evaluate the airway volume in pre- and posttreatment of TMD with the use of neuromuscular orthotics made with ultra-low frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (ULF-TENS). Methods A total of 15 patients were evaluated for TMDs using the related criteria. Those included were treated with ULF-TENS with evaluation of the airway volume both pre- and posttreatment using CBCT and the Dolphin 3D volume analysis software. Results While the symptoms were shown to be significantly reduced in patients who were treated with this particular modality, the airway volume varied in those who reported a reduction after a period of 3 months and those that reported after a period of 6 months. Conclusion Posttreatment evaluation of the airway should be done after a period of 6 months for a more objective evaluation. A multidisciplinary evaluation of the patient is required in such cases.

The major significance of the 2018 gingivitis classification criteria is utilizing a simple, objective, and reliable clinical sign, bleeding on probing score (BOP%), to diagnose gingivitis. However, studies report variations in gingivitis diagnoses with the potential to under- or over-estimating disease occurrence. This study determined the agreement between gingivitis diagnoses generated using the 2018 criteria (BOP%) versus diagnoses using BOP% and other gingival visual assessments. We conducted a retrospective study of 28,908 patients' electronic dental records (EDR) from January-2009 to December-2014, at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Computational and natural language processing (NLP) approaches were developed to diagnose gingivitis cases from BOP% and retrieve diagnoses from clinical notes. Subsequently, we determined the agreement between BOP%-generated diagnoses and clinician-recorded diagnoses. A thirty-four percent agreement was present between BOP%-generated diagnoses and clinician-recorded diagnoses for disease status (no gingivitis/gingivitis) and a 9% agreement for the disease extent (localized/generalized gingivitis). The computational program and NLP performed excellently with 99.5% and 98% f-1 measures, respectively. Sixty-six percent of patients diagnosed with gingivitis were reclassified as having healthy gingiva based on the 2018 diagnostic classification. The results indicate potential challenges with clinicians adopting the new diagnostic criterion as they transition to using the BOP% alone and not considering the visual signs of inflammation. Periodic training and calibration could facilitate clinicians' and researchers' adoption of the 2018 diagnostic system. The informatics approaches developed could be utilized to automate diagnostic findings from EDR charting and clinical notes.

We present the results of linear stability of a damped coplanar double pendulum and its nonlinear motion, when the point of suspension is vibrated sinusoidally in the vertical direction with amplitude a and frequency ω. A double pendulum has two pairs of Floquet multipliers, which have been calculated for various driving parameters. We have considered the stability of a double pendulum when it is in any of its possible stationary states: (i) both pendulums are either vertically downward or upward and (ii) one pendulum is downward and other is upward. The damping is considered to be velocity-dependent, and the driving frequency is taken in a wide range. A double pendulum excited from its stable state shows both periodic and chaotic motion. The periodic motion about its pivot may be either oscillatory or rotational. The periodic swings of a driven double pendulum may be either harmonic or subharmonic for lower values of a. The limit cycles corresponding to the normal mode oscillations of a double pendulum of two equal masses are squeezed into a line in its configuration space. For unequal masses, the pendulum shows multi-period swings for smaller values of a and damping, while chaotic swings or rotational motion at relatively higher values of a. The parametric driving may lead to stabilization of a partially or fully inverted double pendulum.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric distal radius buckle fractures are commonly encountered in the emergency department (ED) and are considered non-complex and stable injuries. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommend managing these fractures with a soft cast and discharging patients directly from the ED. However, prevailing practices often involve rigid casts and follow-up clinic visits, leading to unnecessary congestion, prolonged waiting times, excessive radiographic examinations, and frequent cast changes, resulting in additional financial burdens on hospitals. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted an initial audit over a 6-month period at Hull University and Teaching Hospitals, reviewing 184 pediatric distal radius fractures, of which 84 were buckle fractures in children under 12 years old. Data on demographics, subsequent clinic visits, treating doctor's grade, additional radiographs, initial and final treatment approaches, and cast change frequency were collected. After the initial audit, NICE guideline compliance was promoted through the education of parents and healthcare providers. A second audit was performed on patients within the following 6-month period. RESULTS: This study assessed the management of pediatric distal radius buckle fractures in a cohort of 84 patients. 39/84 (46.4%) of patients sought medical attention within one week of sustaining the injury, with 33/84 individuals being discharged during their first visit, either by consultants or registrars. Most patients (69/84) required only a single X-ray examination in the ED, while some needed two or three X-rays during their evaluation. However, after implementing NICE guidelines, in the second audit cycle, 62 out of 64 were discharged directly from the ED, with 42 receiving focal rigidity casts (FRCs) removed at home and 10 discharged with simple crepe bandages.  Conclusions: This closed-loop audit effectively showcased that adherence to NICE guidelines yielded better patient management by avoiding unnecessary visits, radiographs, and platers. The adoption of the guidelines leads to the conservation of time and resources.

Introduction Wide-awake local anaesthesia with no tourniquet (WALANT) technique is cost-effective, resource-friendly, and safe. This can be used as an alternative to hand surgery procedures in outpatient units. It can be performed in clinics or operating rooms. Methods We retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of WALANT for carpal tunnel decompression (CTD) over two years. Measured results include wound infections, relief of symptoms, paraesthesia, haematoma, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), hospital anxiety and depression scale score (HADS) and cost-effectiveness. Results Eighteen patients underwent CTD under the WALANT technique over two years. VAS score was recorded at 3.1 ± 1.2 during the procedure and 1.67 ± 0.933 at two weeks follow-up. Persistent paraesthesia was found in only one patient at follow-up. Minimal bleeding was recorded during the procedure. No wound infections, revision surgery or post-operative haematoma formation were found. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was reported as 4.77 ± 2.1 after surgery. WALANT was also cost-effective, with an overall amount of £20. Conclusion Performing carpal tunnel decompression under WALANT in one stop upper limb clinic is a safe and cost-effective technique with no significant patient-related complications.

The present study was conducted to characterize the native plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) from the pulse rhizosphere of the Bundelkhand region of India. Twenty-four bacterial isolates belonging to nineteen species (B. amyloliquefaciens, B. subtilis, B. tequilensis, B. safensis, B. haynesii, E. soli, E. cloacae, A. calcoaceticus, B. valezensis, S. macrescens, P. aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, P. guariconensis, B. megaterium, C. lapagei, P. putida, K. aerogenes, B. cereus, and B. altitudinis) were categorized and evaluated for their plant growth-promoting potential, antifungal properties, and enzymatic activities to identify the most potential strain for commercialization and wider application in pulse crops. Phylogenetic identification was done on the basis of 16 s rRNA analysis. Among the 24 isolates, 12 bacterial strains were gram positive, and 12 were gram negative. Among the tested 24 isolates, IIPRAJCP-6 (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), IIPRDSCP-1 (Bacillus subtilis), IIPRDSCP-10 (Bacillus tequilensis), IIPRRLUCP-5 (Bacillus safensis), IIPRCDCP-2 (Bacillus subtilis), IIPRAMCP-1 (Bacillus safensis), IIPRMKCP-10 (Bacillus haynesii), IIPRANPP-3 (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), IIPRKAPP-5 (Enterobacter soli), IIPRAJCP-2 (Enterobacter cloacae), IIPRDSCP-11 (Acinetobacter calcoaceticus), IIPRDSCP-9 (Bacillus valezensis), IIPRMKCP-3 (Seratia macrescens), IIPRMKCP-1 (Pseudomonas aeruginosa), IIPRCKPP-3 (Pseudomonas fluorescens), IIPRMKCP-9 (Pseudomonas guariconensis), IIPRMKCP-8 (Bacillus megatirium), IIPRMWCP-9 (Cedecea lapagei), IIPRKUCP-10 (Pseudomonas putida), IIPRAMCP-4 (Klebsiella aerogenes), IIPRCKPP-7 (Enterobacter cloacae), IIPRAMCP-5 (Bacillus cereus), IIPRSHEP-6 (Bacillus subtilis), IIPRRSBa89 (Bacillus altitudinis) bacterial isolates, IIPRMKCP-9, IIPRAJCP-6, IIPRMKCP-10, IIPRAMCP-5, IIPRSHEP-6, and IIPRMKCP-3 showed the maximum antagonistic activity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris (FOC), Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis (FOL), and Fusarium udum (FU) causing wilt disease of chickpea, lentil, and pigeonpea, respectively, and maximum plant growth-promoting enzyme (phosphatase), plant growth hormone (IAA), and siderophore production show promising results under greenhouse conditions. This study is the first report of bacterial diversity in the pulse-growing region of India.

The Early Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits of India are known for their diverse sauropod fauna, while little is known from the Middle and Late Jurassic. Here we report the first ever remains of a dicraeosaurid sauropod from India, Tharosaurus indicus gen. et sp. nov., from the Middle Jurassic (early-middle Bathonian) strata of Jaisalmer Basin, western India. Known from elements of the axial skeleton, the new taxon is phylogenetically among the earlier-diverging dicraeosaurids, and its stratigraphic age makes it the earliest known diplodocoid globally. Palaeobiogeographic considerations of Tharosaurus, seen in conjunction with the other Indian Jurassic sauropods, suggest that the new Indian taxon is a relic of a lineage that originated in India and underwent rapid dispersal across the rest of Pangaea. Here we emphasize the importance of Gondwanan India in tracing the origin and early evolutionary history of neosauropod dinosaurs.

Xanthomonas oryzae causes tremendous damage in rice plants (Oryza sativa L). Therefore, this study is focused on siderophore-producing Bacillus albus (CWTS 10) for managing BLB disease caused by X. oryzae. Both B. albus and its crude siderophore (methanolic and diethyl ether) extracts inhibited X. oryzae (10-12 mm). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of the extracts indicated the presence of catecholate siderophore functional groups. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis revealed the presence of antimicrobial compounds such as 2-deoxystreptamine, miserotoxin, fumitremorgin C, pipercide, pipernonaline, gingerone A, and deoxyvasicinone. Complete genome sequencing revealed the gene clusters for antibiotic, siderophore, antibacterial, antifungal, and secondary metabolite production. An in vivo study revealed that bacteria (CWTS 10) and their siderophore extracts effectively inhibited X. oryzae. The mode of application of bacterial or siderophore extracts in terms of DI and DSI percentage was as follows: soak method > inoculation method > spray method. In addition to providing enhanced antagonistic activity, there was a significant increase in root and shoot length and weight (wet and dry) of treated plants compared to control plants challenged with X. oryzae. Thus, the results clearly indicate that siderophore-producing B. albus and its siderophore extracts strongly inhibited X. oryzae. However, further field experiments are required before being formulated to protect rice crops from X. oryzae.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the presence of nasal septal deviation in patients presenting with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). METHOD: Patients diagnosed with OSA using polysomnography were further evaluated radiographically for the presence of nasal septal deviation, maxillary sinus septa, and oropharyngeal airway volume using CBCT. RESULTS: Nasal deviation was present in all the patients and was classified according to Negus et al classification, further categorized with Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score, maxillary sinus septa in those patients were classified according to Al Faraj et al, and the oropharyngeal airway volume was found to be an average of 10,086.37 ± 3966.116 mm2 airway volume. CONCLUSION: All the patients in the study had nasal septal deviation, hence it can be considered as a radiographic marker in suspecting OSA.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, industries have gained a thrust on contactless processing for computing technologies and industrial automation. Cloud of Things (CoT) is one of the emerging computing technologies for such applications. CoT combines the most emerging cloud computing and the Internet of Things. The development in industrial automation made them highly interdependent because the cloud computing works like a backbone in IoT technology. This supports the data storage, analytics, processing, commercial application development, deployment, and security compliances. Now amalgamation of cloud technologies with IoT is making utilities more useful, smart, service-oriented, and secure application for sustainable development of industrial processes. As the pandemic has increased access to computing utilities remotely, cyber-attacks have been increased exponentially. This paper reviews the CoT's contribution to industrial automation and the various security features provided by different tools and applications used for the circular economy. The in-depth analysis of security threats, availability of different features corresponding the security issues in traditional and non-traditional CoT platforms used in industrial automation have been analysed. The security issues and challenges faced by IIoT and AIoT in industrial automation have also been addressed.

Alteration of the status of the metabolic enzymes could be a probable way to regulate metabolic reprogramming, which is a critical cellular adaptation mechanism especially for cancer cells. Coordination among biological pathways, such as gene-regulatory, signaling, and metabolic pathways is crucial for regulating metabolic adaptation. Also, incorporation of resident microbial metabolic potential in human body can influence the interplay between the microbiome and the systemic or tissue metabolic environments. Systemic framework for model-based integration of multi-omics data can ultimately improve our understanding of metabolic reprogramming at holistic level. However, the interconnectivity and novel meta-pathway regulatory mechanisms are relatively lesser explored and understood. Hence, we propose a computational protocol that utilizes multi-omics data to identify probable cross-pathway regulatory and protein-protein interaction (PPI) links connecting signaling proteins or transcription factors or miRNAs to metabolic enzymes and their metabolites using network analysis and mathematical modeling. These cross-pathway links were shown to play important roles in metabolic reprogramming in cancer scenarios.
